Climara Patch Information

Climara Patch is an estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) used to manage menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. It is also indicated for the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis in women at high risk of bone loss. It works by releasing estradiol hemihydrate, which is chemically identical to the natural estrogen produced by the ovaries. The patch delivers this hormone continuously through the skin and into the bloodstream to replace declining levels during menopause.

Side Effects

Commonly reported side effects include application-site reactions, such as redness, itching, or irritation at the patch site. You may also experience breast pain or tenderness, headache, migraine, bloating, gas, or abdominal pain. Other frequent reactions include nausea, vomiting, mood swings, irritability, depression, and breakthrough bleeding or spotting.

Contact your doctor if you have any of the serious side effects of Climara Patch including:
• Increased risk of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism), stroke, and heart attack.
• Increased risk of probable dementia in women 65 years of age or older. • Increased risk of gallstones or gallbladder inflammation.
• Malignant Neoplasms: Using estrogen alone increases the risk of endometrial (uterine) cancer in women with a uterus. There is also a potentially increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
• Vision Issues: Potential for blood clots in the eye (retinal vein occlusion) or vision changes.

Seek medical attention immediately if you experience sudden leg pain or swelling, severe chest pain, shortness of breath, a sudden severe headache, confusion, or slurred speech, vision loss, or a new lump in the breast. Consult your healthcare provider before stopping this medication; while discontinuing therapy abruptly is not medically dangerous, a gradual taper is usually recommended to prevent a sudden and intense return of menopausal symptoms.

Precautions:

Do not use Climara Patch if you have a known hypersensitivity to estradiol or any of the components in the patch adhesive. Tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
o History of heart attack or stroke.
o History of or active blood clots in the legs or lungs.
o Known or suspected breast cancer or other estrogen-dependent cancers.
o Liver disease or impaired liver function.
o Undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding.

Climara may interact with medications such as aromatase inhibitors (anastrozole), tamoxifen, or raloxifene. Other interactions include tranexamic acid and certain liver enzyme-inducing drugs that may decrease estrogen levels. Climara is contraindicated during pregnancy and should be stopped immediately if pregnancy is suspected. It is recommended to speak to your doctor immediately if you are planning to get pregnant. Estrogen can pass into breast milk and may affect the quantity or quality of the milk produced. Women who have not had a hysterectomy must typically take a progestin alongside Climara to reduce the risk of endometrial cancer.

Store patches at room temperature away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Do not remove a patch from its individual pouch until you are ready to apply it. Keep out of reach of children and pets, as used patches still contain enough medication to be harmful.
